THOUGHTS ON 9/11
The events of September 11, 2001 have forever changed our world.
Without an thorough investigation by a body independent of the administration and agencies to be investigated free to answer all questions that have risen the people of America must question all policies and actions taken by this administration since that fateful day. In particular, the USA PATRIOT Act of 2001, the Military Commissions Act of 2006, and the John Warner Defense Authorization Act of 2007 are pieces of legislation that have cause for grave concerns regarding the potential for serious abuse of power by this administration or any in the future. The unlawful domestic spying on American citizens may be the precursor to future actions that could further threaten our liberties, specifically that of Habeas Corpus and Posse Comitatus, both of which have come under serious threat. With further questions raised following the elections of 2000, 2004, and 2006 it is imperative that we have a Congress which will stand and fight for the people, act with the power that the Constitution has given it, and put an end to what may be an intentional attack on the very Constitution itself.
In light of this administration's policies following the events of September 11 such as the rush into wars against nations that upon scrutiny have not been proven to pose a threat to our nation, the enactment of multiple legislations that have been passed without serious and thorough debate, the rhetoric that dominates a media that has failed to question these policies and actions, and the serious questions surrounding the election process since 2000, I believe there is one course that Congress must take while there is still hope to secure our dwindling liberties and freedom.
Congress should act now to declare that this nation is not at war with Afghanistan and Iraq, the purpose being to strip this administration of the powers it assumed from rushing into those wars. Further, Congress should act boldly in denying this administration opportunity to attack or invade any nation without approval. The Constitution clearly separates the powers of each branch, and with good reason. The founders of that great document knew the threat of tyranny and despotism.
However, this declaration is not enough. The fundamental liberties inalienable to all people, and particularly to the people of this nation, are not granted by the Constitution but instead are protected by it. The threat against those liberties can be seen in the passing of the USA PATRIOT Act of 2001, the Military Commissions Act of 2006, and the John Warner Defense Authorization Act of 2007. Each of these Acts has the capacity to threaten our privacy, security and liberty. Each of these Acts threatens to such extent that we must rely upon the ethics of this and any future administration to not abuse the powers it has bestowed upon itself, rather than the system of checks and balances that are the foundation of this great nation.
Should Congress fail to act and uphold the oath that each member swore, "to support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter: So help me God.", then we may be witness to the decline of the American Dream and wake up in an Amerika Nightmare.
Good Luck and God Bless
